NGL County Men’s Championships

Lewis White was crowned NGL County Men’s Strokeplay Champion for the first time after recording a one-shot victory in wet conditions at Overstone Park GC.
The Northampton member, who turned 28 years of age the following day, collected the perfect early birthday present after shooting two rounds of one-under-par 71 to nudge ahead of Miles Mudge (Staverton) and Fergus Robinson (Northants County).

White said: “To put my name on that trophy, and there are some good names on it, means a lot.
“I thought this was one of my best opportunities to win because Overstone is similar to Northampton in that you can give a ride and have a few wedges into greens.
“I played solid in the morning, but couldn’t buy a putt unfortunately. In the afternoon it started going my way as I hit a few good shots and holed some putts. I got to five under par for the day after 14 holes.
“I didn’t finish particularly brilliantly, and in all honesty I thought I’d thrown it all away coming down the last, but I holed a good five-footer, which turned out to be the winning putt.”
Former champion Mudge, who triumphed the last time the event was played at Overstone in 2012, completed his last 10 holes in four under par to finish joint-second alongside Robinson, who collected the Braid’s Driver for the best under-22 golfer.

Robinson also picked up the team prize alongside County club-mates Owen Watts and Corey Neville, while Tom Burgh (Peterborough Milton) lifted the Parsons Cup after shooting the best net score of 141.
