Big golf events postponed until late July
County golfers looking to compete in national events in 2020 will have an extended wait for their first opportunity after England Golf postponed all competitions until the latter part of July, due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
With golf courses now closed until further notice and restrictions for travel and public life in place for an indefinite period, the national governing body extended its initial postponement date by seven weeks from June 7th to July 27th.
The English Senior Women’s Stroke Play, the Logan Trophy, the English Schools Team Championship, the McGregor Trophy, the English Girls Open Championship and the Carris Trophy were amongst the events to be called off.
Although England Golf are hoping to re-schedule some of these postponed events, Director of Championships James Crampton was keen to stress that they are following expert health advice before making any decisions.
He said: “It is with regret that we have had to extend the list of postponed England Golf events as we all adhere to the expert advice and necessary measures now in place to combat the spread of coronavirus.
“There are a number of intricacies associated with championship golf which need to be considered well in advance of any event taking place and these, as much as golf courses being open for play, are key factors in our decision-making.”
