Farr reaches Spanish Amateur Final
Northamptonshire’s Callum Farr put up a brave fight in the 36-hole Spanish Amateur Championship Final as he finished runner-up to Koen Kouwenaar (Netherlands) at Las Colinas GC.
Although Farr trailed by six after 22 holes, he reduced the deficit by taking the fifth and eighth and then kept the match alive by winning the 15th and 16th, before a bogey on the 17th ended his chances of glory.
The County first teamer will still take plenty from the tournament as he reached the final with four battling victories in the knockout stages, after taking 18th spot in strokeplay qualifying with scores of 71 and 73.
Farr was taken the distance by both Nordin Van Tilburg (Netherlands) and Alex Hietala (Finland) in the first two rounds, beat Luis Masaveu Roncal (Spain) on the 19th in the quarters, before defeating Alvaro Mueller-Baumgart (Spain) 2&1 in the semi-finals.
The tournament was also memorable for fellow Northants golfer Ben Jones as he won the qualifying competition, which included 120 players, with scores of 71 and 66 on the Alicante course as he also helped England A lift the Nations Cup.
Despite beating England team-mate Tom Sloman by one hole in the first knockout round, he couldn’t progress any further as he lost to Bob Geurts (Netherlands) on the second extra hole.
